Default G3 vs Nikon 5700

I just compared shots from the Nikon 5700 at maximum optical zoom (8x or 280mm equiv.) with the Canon G3 at maximum optical zoom (4x or 140mm equiv.). Same settings. I was testing the theory that I could crop the Canon shots to get the same effective zoom as with the higher priced Nikon.

In fact, when I cropped Canon shots to the same size print as the Nikon pics, the Canon shots came out sharper and brighter. I'm assuming this is because of the Canon's 2.0 lens vs. the Nikon's 2.8.

Any thoughts :?:

Yes, they were 4x6. But regardless, the difference in quality was quite noticeable. And surprising given the price of the 5700.

I want the 4MP so that I can, in fact, have enough data to crop the G3 pictures and still get a good picture, whether it's 4x6 or 8x10.

plus, there R other reasons why ppl choose 2 buy either .
noteably :
5700's Avant-Guarde vs. G3's Retro DESIGN,
5700's longer zoom vs. G3's brighter lens,
5700's (unbelieveably) short vs. G3's (incredibly) long batt.life, etc

I've migrated 2 to the latter for the following reasons :
[1] 5700's left side buttons gets in the way when not in use (changes settings when leaned on anything),
[2] G3 takes way- better flash, when compared w/ dedicated external flash . even G3's /tiny-slit/ internal 1 is way- better than 5700's picky pop-up 1 .
[3] the short life-span of 5700 batt's made me eventually buy (1) extra batt's, (2) independent external batt, (3) and even the dedicated batt.pack & grip ! duh

1 minus so far : G3 kinda zooms slower than 5700, and in increments .

Mango:
Thanks for the tips. The only problem I've noticed with the G3 is that my finger covers the flash when I'm taking a vertical shot. I guess I'll eventually learn to keep my fingers out of the way.
