Default curves in pictures

I just purchased an S50. I like it a grat deal, except I'm noticing curvature in pictures that shouldn't have any. For example, when I take a macro picture of a book, the edges of the book are slightly curved. Same thing with other straight objects like a bookshelf or a framed picture.

Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks for any help.

It a very commen thing of lenses. Unfortunately.

Wideangle lenses and also big zoomlenses typically seems to have this problems. There is nothing you can do in your camera, but you can adjust these curves (as you call them - also called i.e pincussion a.s.o) in an graphic editor. There are several tools on the net for solving that problem.
I use photohop for it. But there's also other specialized programs for it.
