I'm looking to get a small point and shoot camera for a friend, and I know I want to get a Canon. Other than the physical appearance, is there another general difference between the "A" line and the "SD"line? Is one supposed to be better than the other?

A's are larger and take AA batteries for the most part. If your friend can handle the size.. I would highly recommend the A610

The SD 550 is a true point and shoot camera. It features very few manual options, and is made to be small and stylish, with a large LCD. It also has a very good build.

The A620/610 features many manual options and settings ( Program,AV, TV ), has an awesome battery life, and a flip outLCD, but is larger and has only a 2" LCD.It is heavier, and has a grip on it's side and is easier to hold, but it isn't as well built as the SD 550.It isnt prone to theLCD cracking, like the SD series is.

If you want to know the difference in the manual options you get from the two cameras, goto a store where both are on display and scroll through both their menus.
