In Macro Mode, the zoom is restricted to the "Wide Angle" end of zoom range.

In Super Macro Mode, the zoom is disabled and is set to maximum wide angle.

thanks scott,
that is something pretty dumb on a cam as good as the S2 for canon to do.
i post over in the pentax dslr forum. i've also got a fuji s7000 and it has the macro and supermacro. you can however use the zoom in macro mode. i can't believe canon would not let you use the zoom when shotting macros..

In standard macro mode, you can zoom from 6-18 mm, approximately. or 36-108mm (35mm equiv).

A limited zoom range in macro is common in super-zooms. I don't think it's possible to create optics that work well in both macro and normal zoom over the entire super-zoom range.

Canon is different from other super-zoom makers in that it divides macro in to super-macro (no-zoom) and normal-macro (limited zoom). I think super-macro is a compromise to obtain the extremely close focus distance without excessively compromising the lens.

In general compact super-zooms are a compromise in many dimensions - it's surprising what has been achieved.
