Feature set is much better especially zoom and IS, but is image quality significantlybetter or the same? I am getting scared off by some reviews that the image quality of the S3 is not al that spectacular. Thanks!

why not take a few test pictures and compare them? Wouldn't it then help your decision making process?

Try comparing similar test shots at Steve's sample images.

Good idea, but my Powershot is gone as it was a drop casualty in my latest trip to Italy...

The image quality is similiar to 6MP A series camera. The added size is just the long zoom lens, so if you don't make use of the zoom much, you're carrying unnecessary bulk.

The IS is useful down to 1/8 ~1/4 second, and it's absolutely useless at shutter speed any slower. On very long exposures, the IS seems to add "handshake" of its own, notably visible camera shape in the image in multi-second exposure with IS enabled despite the fact a tripod was used.

Make sure you disable IS when you're making a long exposure.

The zoom is pretty usesful if you like it..
Attached is a night shot of a construction crane a perhaps 1/4 mile away using the longest end of zoom, ISO 80, 15 second(the longest you can on this camera).

Not spectacular, but not shoddy.
