I bought an EX Z-110 at Christmas and, going through the specs., noticed that the max aperture is a strange 3.1 where even cheap cameras can manage to get 2.8. What's the story here? Is this a hardware imposed limit, or software?Regardless of that..WHY? ...Willy.

It is a hardware limit. Aperture capability has to do with how much light the lens will let in. You probably won't find many cheap 35 to 114mm equivalent camera with 2.8. They seem to have given you a little more zoom range to 3.2X but had to cut the max aperture a little. There are other small cameras with f3.1 to f3.5 as the max aperture and are only 3X.
