this is about as close as i can get with my kit lens that came with my digital Rebel

I think you can get closer with manual focus on the rebel, I know I have:-)

who cares how close you can get. That's a great shot. If you had stopped down the lens to around f16 or more the depth-of-field would have been better but I like it anyway.
