For you Coin Collectors.

I sent my son to the local convenience store this morning. When he came back he gave me my change and in it was this coin. An Indian head penny 1870. Its in pretty good shape and I think worth between $200 and $250. To make things even stranger, Im in Canada. So where has this coin been for the last 142 years?

My wife went through our dresser drawers over the weekend and ended up with a "huge" bag of change that she said she was going to convert to dollar bills. I was surprised that she found so many coins.

So, I told her to make sure to check the coins and look for 1964 and earlier quarters and dimes (because they're silver here in the U.S.) and check pennies to make sure they're not "wheat" (as some of them may be worth more than a penny).

But, I forgot to tell her to check for Indian Head Pennies. ;-)

Good find.

During the silver boon (caused by the Hunt Bros), silver was at a premium and silver coins from the States made their way to Canada for smelting. Also Cdn silver coins made their way to the States for the same reason. Its against the law to melt your own countries coins down. I wonder what you do with silver coins now? For me it would be fun just to sort through your coins making sure there weren't any minting errors, or other oddities amongst the pile of coins.

On another note I should mention that the color of the Indian head penny is way off. Its a reddish brown color and not that silvery color that got posted. The Microscope camera doesnt do a good job of calibrating color.

Score! I'm amazed it was still in circulation.

It wouldn't be the first time some kid spent his father's coin collection!

I spent my own small collection once (long ago when old ones were still in circulation) to buy my mother a present.

It was probably from a stolen coin collection and the thief was too ignorant to realize its value. The other thought was that somewhere there is a child with a sore butt.

That's very sweet story, penolta :)

It would have been a very poignant story if he sold his coin collection to buy his mother a comb for her beautiful long hair. Meanwhile she cut her hair and sold it so she could buy her little boy an album to hold his coin collection.
