What stopped you playing guitar?

Oh, congratulations that was your 500th post.
I am actually partially retired (sadly, will never make it all the way).

I didn't just quit one day--the opportunities to play became less frequent, and over the years other things took priority until one day I told my wife I would sell my last guitar, a twelve string acoustic, to buy things in the other areas of my life. I still have a warm spot for that guitar, it's hard to explain to someone not musically inclined...

I'm a piano/keyboards player so I think our attachment to an instrument is different as it's not something that travels with us in the same way, I see the guys who play guitar or solo instruments get attached to them. I find myself and drummers for example are not in quite the same boat.

I'm not sure that I could ever stop playing music or not have the ability to lay down some tunes when I wanted to so sure selling the 12 string was a huge step.

I think sentimentality played a bigger part than love for music, as I had bought the guitar in 1975, it was my first and last, and the only one I felt "close to". I bought it when I was single, and kept it through two divorces. The song "This old guitar", by John Denver says it pretty well...
