Default Northern Pearly Eye

These critters are so skittish, and, since they don't go for nectar, it's hard to sneak up on one perched long enough to photograph. I got a fairly good shot of one last year, as it was perched on and licking some animal droppings! But this Pearly Eye gave me a great opportunity for a finely detailed shot. Can you tell what he is perched on and licking?

I'm afraid to guess!
Nice shot though.

Good shot - Whatever it is, you should use it for bait more often!

GW & Penolta - glad you liked the photo. Pearly Eyes sure are good-looking critters, despite their feeding habits!

Here's another shot of the same 'fly, taken a bit farther away. Now can you tell what he's perched on?

OK - since no one has guessed the "mystery butterfly attractor," I'll complete the story. I often use my bicycle for local transportation. Was headed out to a nearby trail for some trail repair work (and photography along the way), and left my bike parked at the trailhead. The Pearly Eye (great lover of various salts) was licking the dried perspiration on the bicycle handlebars! Will have to try out this "butterfly magnet" again soon...

Well, that's a relief. I was afraid it was something else.
