These are pretty shots - But both are soft. This works with the shot of the tulips, but doesn't work on the first shot.

On both shots, I would have left more space on the top.

Saying all the above, they do "work."

beyond what dave has said, you also need to bring out the whites on the first shot a little bit. a little work in post can bring your whites up and make them stand out.

the tulip shot works better, as they are naturally a good subject for a more muted/soft look.

#1 is a double exposure shot (f16 in the first take to capture the sharpness of the petals and f4 to capture the blurred background) to blur out the blackground (which had been too close to the white chrysanthemums) while maintaining a reasonable sharpness for the petals.
