Default Just Hatched

I think this is a "young" firefly which just "hatched".
However, the more research I do I think it maybe a soldier beetle.

I believe this is a lacewing larvae shell. There was one nearby it I scared it off. It's definitely not a firefly larvae.

Wow, that's the wildest looking bug I've ever seen! I swear I saw it in the movie "Abyss"....

I'm guessing you are right. Can't find anything exactly like it, but it will probably turn darker in a while and start to look more like the ones shown on the web.

I didn't get optical illusion at first but WOW you are right. Abyss it is!

That's just his old larval shell. The "eyes" are the holes where his legs came from. The "eye" area is actually inside the shell.

As I looked for more information, what I thought was a firefly larvae shell is closer to a lacewing larvae shell. There was a lacewing nearby but I scared it off.

I just looked closer and found the headshell over to the left.

I think your emendations are correct - Soldier Beetle and Lacewing larval skin (shed).

Nice catch.

Thanks Penolta - you did what my old EMS partner used to make me do a lot - go to the dictionary.

I just learned one more thing.

Yes, it's a soldier beetle. You cannot see the head of a firefly in dorsal view, the pronotum (top of the first thoracic segment) overhangs the head.
