Default Don't know what this was

but I put "weird purple vine flower" in Google, and it matched the 4th image returned (I love Google). Evidently it's a passion flower. With those inner parts, I'd say so

Thanks for looking.

I think you are right. We used to call them 'Maypops" as a kid because of the green seed pods - a bit smaller than a lemon. We liked to throw them at each other and "pop" them on the street.

Lovely passion flower shots and I like the baby grass-hopper in the last 2 shots - cute.

Great photos of our Tennessee State Wildflower! (state garden flower is the Iris)

PS - In this case "Passion" refers to suffering - missionaries used the flower to illustrate scenes in Christ's suffering (crown of thorns, nails, etc seen in the floral parts)

Very nice shots of the passionflower. The flower has to be pretty because the fruit is so plain!

Clint501, DyaneG, mole, banksy: Thank you all for the kind replies. Sorry to be so long getting back to you, I just noticed the replies today. This was the most striking thing I saw that day (I posted some other pictures in the Olympus micro four thirds forum), I had never seen one before.

mole, yea I read that about the passion flower (the missionary part, didn't know about the Tennessee state flower), I guess sometimes a stamen is just a stamen (or is it pistil? It's been way too long since high school biology).
