Default What is this?

I'm just particularly interested in names of species, especially latin names. I have a couple of books on "plant latin" but none on "insect latin"

Nope, not a stonefly, they have a different body, a different wing vein pattern, and have 2 cerci at the end of the abdomen, usually long ones. It's an alderfly, order Neuroptera, family Sialidae. The larvae are aquatic. It's a really nice photo.

Thank you all for your contributions. It's nice to know the names. I also consulted a flyfisher site. They seem to have good knowledge of insects Seems it is an alderfly, order Neuroptera, family Sialidae

Thanks

Torgny

Torgny - sorry for the mis-identification. Of course you are correct - this is a great shot of an alderfly, not a stonefly at all.

Tallgrass - Thanks for correcting my mistake! Not sure where my brain was, but obviously elsewhere...
