I just updated...Google's freeware Picasa 2 now supports the Canon 30D and Nikon D200 (among others) RAW files. It's got a bunch of improvements on other areas, too!

I use Picasa for browing images (I like it for that purpose).

But, I wouldn't use it for raw conversion, since it doesn't support a camera's "As Shot" White Balance (unless they fixed that in the new version).

In other words, it always uses the same RGB multipliers for White Balance/Color Temperature when rendering images from raw files, regardless of how you set the camera's white balance when taking the photos from what I can tell. So, you'd need to tweak the color on every image, unless the temperature of the lighting you were shooting in happened to be where it worked well using Picasa's defaults.

It's a pretty good browsing tool though, and has some neat features for basic editing.

Hi Jim & AlpineMan,

Yes my son also do it for me this last Sunday and the new is the version 2.5.0...with a lot of new improvements. BUT...you ALWAYS needed to "Save" all the changes...that the earlier one was "Automatically" one.

As you my dear Jim, I send all my photos also the our forum trough the Picasa...now the "Sharpness" is "Automatically"...instead that before was needed to lower till around 60/70% so the file size was not exceed the 250400 bytes

Here an example using the new version... Enjoy!

Love the improved Picasa version:blah:
