I have just got a G6 and would like to see whether an external flash adds to my camera's capabilities and reduces the red eye.

I've never used an external flash before and am not sure how I will get on with it so I'm looking for a cheap option that I can mess about with for shooting in a concert situation from the front.

You have a hotshoe, the cheap flash solution would be a generic flash (vivitar 285HV or alike). Choose a flash that give you manual partial power settings and auto mode.
Do not buy a flash with full power only,it will lackflexibility.

Also, Make sure the trigger voltage is safe for your camera (most of recent flashes is)
