Currently, there's a used 420EX flash for sale at a camera store near me (a little less than a new 220EX), and since I really don't know a lot about flash units (and hence, discouraged to pay so much for a flash), I was wondering if any of you could tell me what to worry about when buying a used flash. There's a 30 day return policy so that gives plenty of time to test the few things here and there.

The big discharge capacitor in old flashguns can get leaky due to non-use mainly. If it charges up in the normal time for the model then it must be OK, if it takes longer than normal it's suspect but may (or may not) improve with regular use as the plates reform electrochemically.

It's wise to test the flash with your camera to see if it operates correctly in ttl mode, wireless mode , etc ...
