Yes you can, and that's why they can sell slave flashes ;)

That's the reason why you have to use slave flash, they just need to « see » your camera flash burst, no need for electric connection, nothing else. They often came with a (simple) bracket to fix it to your camera tripod threaded hole.

In theory, or academically speaking, you can't set for the best exposition, because your camera just have Programmed Auto exposure control . But it's not a bad new. You can just do some trial and error test and you will find the best way to use the slave flash.
The point is you better choose a slave flash that offer you several settings, like manual partial power, or auto mode with several aperture setting (although it will not be used as it should be) . With several setting of output power, you can find one which suit to your actual shooting condition.

The thing to be concerned about is whether the 3700 has a preflash...that will determine whether you can buy any slave flash, or if you have to spend a little more on a flash that can recognise the preflash.

For instance I use a flash (Metz 34-cs2 Digital) which actually has a switch to tell the flash whether I'm using a camera that has the preflash or just a single flash.

Here's some good info about Nikons and preflash with slaves (unfortunately they don't mention the 3700):
