Canon 430Ex in auto mode?
Hey everyone. I am new to all this.

I am wondering if anyone can confirm is the Canon 430ex flash can be used on a XTi rebel is auto mode?

What I mean is can the camera take care of everything including external flash in the auto mode?

I can't be absolutely positive, but my XT uses the EX-430 in auto on the camera and flash and does a great job.

Set your camera to Manual and let the flash set aperture and speed... even my old 420 will do that.

The 430EX works too when the camera mode dial is in the green rectangle box auto mode. Just point and shoot. The camera and flash will figure it out for you.

OK, let's clear up a few things. First, the flash should be set to ETTL mode. That will allow the flash/camera to choose flash output automatically.

Using manual exposure on the camera is a good idea with flash INDOORS, but the flash won't automatically select aperture and speed. In manual exposure YOU still select that.

So, here's my suggestion if you're using flash indoors.
  1. Set flash to ETTL
  2. Set Camera exposure to MANUAL
  3. Set aperture for the DOF you desire - if you don't care about DOF, set aperture to 6.3 for most stuff and f8-11 for group shots.
  4. Set ISO to 400. If there is a lot of sunlight in the room you may need to drop ISO to 200.
  5. If you have standard white ceilings then set flash at 45 degree angle so you get both flash bounced off ceiling and directly at your subject.
Those settings will get you going.
