I recently bought a 580EX flash for my 20D, upgrading from the 550EX. One of the big reasons for the upgrade is I need to have the flash fire 2, 3, 4 or 5 times (whatever I can get) while standing on the sidelines shooting high-school football. Sometimes I can get two "burst" flashes out of it to match the "burst" mode on my camera, but many times I cannot.Lens is Tamron 55-200 f4-5.6 and I usually shoot on manual, with shutter speed at 1/250, aperture at 5.6, AI Focus, burst mode. So far, I've set the 580EX on E-TTL(2), but I could change it to manual with, say, less output at 1/2, etc.Any ideas on how to get what I want out of this new flash unit? The instruction booklet is not helpful on this subject. Thanks!

You have to get a HV (High-Voltage) pack which will work with both the 550 or 580 EX
...and for the do it yourselfer:

-> The HV pack will allow theses flashes to recycle much faster (within reason), but abuse it you can fried or melt the head...

The manual mode with fractional power is not that flexible as you can tell it decreases your distance and the subject have to be within that range. IMO increasing the ISO and keep in Auto may shorten your recycle time as well....

Thanks ... I kind of suspected that the answer would lie in spending more $$ to buy an auxiliary power pack!
