I have just unpacked my EF-500 DG Super and was trying to understand how it works. Both the book on the drebel and the book on the flash appear to require that one flash unit be mounted on the camera before I can use a second flash unit as a wireless slave. Is that correct or am I missing something?

That's correct!

You need at least two external flashes (1 Master + 1 Slave) or a remote ST-E2 controller instead

Only Minolta and Nikon let you use the camera's built-in flash to control the slave(s) ;)

I have a Sunpak Digital Slave flash and I "fire " if from the flash on the camera.

I also use a piece of 35mm fully exposed film covering the camera's flash to fire it when you do not want to "use" the camera's flash. Works on a Nikon 995. Now have a Pana FZ20 but have not tried it on the Pana.

I have two flashes a Canon 580EX and a Canon 420EX I have the 580EX on camara and set the 420EX on the floor behind model to reduce contrast on wall. This makes the shadows from the 580EX softer and adds a nice glow on wall behind model.
