i just got an external flash (sunpak ds20) and since it has no control to increase/decrease the flash, i was wondering what you guys use as alternatives to commercial diffusers/dampers.

Well, in a pinch there's always the sheet of paper or hankerchief trick. --But the real trick is getting the paper, etc., far enough away from the flash head that it actually does a decent job of diffusing.

i see. i did hear from someone that a neutral density filter can be used. what are your thoughts on this? also, i thought diffusers were supposed to go right smack onto the flash? anyone with pics of how they set up diffusers if they have to?

I've never used a nd filter with flash in that way, but yes it can be done. You'll have to practice, though, to find out what is necessary. Best thing to do, I think, would be to put your camera on manual, then take a bunch of test shots, adjusting the shutter speed and aperture until you find out what's actually necessary for your camera.

Here's the quick and dirty method of using a paper I mentioned; it's not pretty, nor particularly accurate, so like everything else, you'll have to experiment; it does work in a pinch, however:
