Default Flash for Nikon D5000

Hi all: I have been off the grid for a while! I am looking for an on-camera flash for my D5000 to take good photos in the dark with little available light, like kids trick-or-treating on Halloween or an outdoor dance party. I have a dinky Nikon SS-400 flash that a photog friend picked out for me. Frankly, it doesn't do much more than the camera's flash. Thanks!

About the minimum for outdoor use is a GN36 and you still should at least be prepared to get the speedlite off-camera on a bracket.

The outdoor space can really eat up the power. You might want to use a soft-box/diffuser or bounce card and the more power you have available, the better.

I get by with a GN36 at night outdoors, but I wish I had a GN48 or stronger.
