Default Flash Position Question

I have seen several photographers aim their flash backwards at a 45 degree angle.

What is the purpose of this?

What is the best way to use your external flash?

Huge question that could take a long time to answer as there are many options to using external flash depending on the environment you are in. You can point the flash back at 45 degrees, but this I've not seen, I have seen straight back, this will work if you are very close to your subject and gives a little 'puff' of light.

I usually work at 45 degrees forward with the wide angle adaptor down and the catch light card out to give a softish light with some diffusion. I'm not one to over power with flash so work near to ambient and then fill with flash.
