flash query
Hi, I shoot with a canon 450d and 430 EX flash. If I am in manual, TV or AV mode and underexpose by a stop to make my subject stand out and use the flash in ETTL mode (metering on my subject using the (*) button), will the flash exposure on the subject be underexposed by one stop also? I am basically querying fill flash. Does the flash metering work independently of the metering set for the flash. Would I have to increase the flash exposure by one stop to compensate?

Flash meters different than camera's exposure. Exposure compensation will not affect flash output - you use flash exposure compensation (FEC) to do that. But the flash shouldn't NEED to be adjusted up just because you adjusted the camera's exposure down.

Basically in ETTL the flash fires a pre-flash and the camera/flash meters off that light hitting your subject. ETTL is designed to attempt to properly expose your subject UNLESS you use FEC.
