Default Good midrange strobist flash?

Im really interested in getting into off camera flash photography, but have a few questions!

Firstly are second hand flashes worth the money? I have found many nikon flashes on ebay (eg nikon sb-25, I have been told that nikons will work with my canon 550d, but not with ttl), I can't seem to find many canon flashes a few but they are not worth buying as they are to expensive for a used flash (I may as well buy a new one!)

At the moment I can see my self using it off camera and doing strobist work. Are there any flashes that won't work for this (From my basic knoledge I know I need a flash that will do manual control, do they all have that?)

If a used flash is not worth the money and I go down the new route the canon 430ex II looks like a very nice flash, but is very expensive are there any decent cheaper alternatives?

(Sorry for all the questions!)
