I have just bought a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight as I have to photograph a band this weekend . I am totally new to flash photography and am struggling to understand some aspects of it. Namely, in TTL mode and TTL BL do I go by the the camera meter or is it worked out for me by the flash? The reason that I ask is that when I am taking practice shots that I like that seem to be exposed correctly the camera meter indicates that this shot should infact be under exposed but they are not.

I think (hope) that this is just a case of me being stupid, I guess I really need to know what meter I go by? Also if anyone has got any hints or tips for photographing bands/very dark situations it would really be appreciated.
