Default Nikon 5700

I'm having great difficulty setting up my 5700 with an external power pack. I just bought a Wein Safe-sync and I just cannot for the life of me get it to pop my lights. I've tried to understand the manual to no avail, reading the section on external speedlights several times. The Wien and my PC cord are fine, as I've tried them with my non-digital cameras. I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing, as far as menus on the 5700. Please, if anyone can help me to set up my 5700 properly, I would be grateful. Thanks

Make sure that your popup flash is up and that the Wein Safe sync or sync cord is not preventing the popup flash from reaching its top position. On my 5700 I have to install the Safe Sync with the synch cord on my side of the camera.

Not sure if the 5700 works the same way, but on my 5400 I had to search through the menues to find the flash options and use it to enable external flash and disable the internal flash before it would fire something connected to the hot-shoe.
