which would you recommend... sb 600 or sb 900

I am looking to purchase an external flash.... which would be best for the d5000 or the d90?

kailona-

A lot really depends on what you are photographing. The SB-600 is a good flash that can be used, in the direct flash mode, out to 28 to 30 feet.

If you need more flash range, then you will have to move up to the SB-800, or SB-900 flash units. I mention the SB-800 because it can be purchased ocassionally on E-Bay for less money than a new SB-900 flash unit.

thanks Sarah! I will look into it!

I photograph mainly kids, family and lots of school functions..... getting into sports as well.

I posted on another thread about this black spot that kept coming up when I took photos with the flash on the camera and was told it was a shadow being cast from the lens hood/lens being that I was using a 18-200 lens on a D40...(I think I understood that correct :)) They advise I get an external flash for the low light places I take pictures at.

So I am really thinking something that I could use everyday all occassion that will give me better light when taking pics.

kailona-

Thanks for your post. Based on that information, the SB-400, if you do not need a lot of flash range, or the SB-600 will work just fine for you.

u can also try the Nissin Di622 Speedlite it has quite a good range in terms of GN @44 (ISO100) 105mm. this is my currently flash for my canon and im quite satisfied with it, it matches my shooting needs whenever an external flash is required.

cheers!

kronuz-

Yes, the NissinDi622 is a good external flash, but it too is flash range limited. That is probably why you are looking forward to the canon EX-580 II as your next piece of gear.

Have a great day.

Well it depends on your budget. The Nikon SB-400 is about $110.00, the Nikon SB-600 is over $230.00. There are third party flash like the Metz 48 at about $200.00.

I have always stayed with Nikon flashes and they have been very dependable and performed well for me. Happy Thanksgiving.
