I recently took the plunge into the digital world after more years then I like to admit to using 35mm cameras. I bought a Canon A710 IS and find that pictures with the built in flash just doesn't cut it. I am considering a Canon "bolt on" HF-DC 1. I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

Here are two cheap slave flashes for digital cameras:

Sunpak Digital Flash http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...goryNavigation

Vivitar DF120 Digital Slave Flash http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search

I use the Sunpak Digital Camera Flash Adapterin conjuction with an old Vivitar flash that I had with my A-75 and get good results, although I do take one or two test shots first if I am bouncing the flash off the ceiling rather than shooting straight on. With the Sunpak Adapter, you willneed to buy a separate flash, but you are not limited to the digital camera flashes and can buy a powerful old-style flash at a good price and still come out costing less than the Canon slave flash. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search

Search this forums for these flashes and you should get plenty of stuff to read.

Edwardr: I appreciate your advise and am going to take a look at the recommended slave flashes. With your advise it sounds like I can improve on the built in flash.
