I currently have a Canon 550 and use it with the 10D and the EOS 1ds. I am not overly pleased with the automatic ETTL exposures. I wind up setting it to overexposure or underexposure most of the time.

Will purchasing the 580 give me better exposures? Is it more accurate in the ETTL mode?

The ETTL exposure is metered and controlled from the camera... through the lens!
The flash head(s) only respond to commands from the body and do not have their own intelligence

-> Independent parties such as Metz 54MZ has an alternate mode which could use it's own sensor built-into the flash to control the exposure in Auto mode instead of the camera...
