You'll need multiple flash(es) head

-> One 'Master' 550/580EX (or Sigma EF-500DG) can trigger/control many 'Slaves' wirelessly...
An ST-E2 would also do it

Not if you use an ST-E2

But then even if the "Master" is on the camera - its output can still be disabled (not contributing to the overall lighting)

This is why I mentioned the Sigma EF-500DG Super - It's both Master and Slaves (about the price of an ST-E2 or 420EX), and significantly less costly than the 550/580EX...
-> The more head you buy the more $ you save

To use multiple flash`s on my 5D I use a large hammerhead external flash. This flash having a large storage capacitor gives me a lot of flash`s before requiring a recharge. Set to high speed flash it reduces the power taken from the flash, so it kills two birds with one stone. Twenty flash`s at low power 1/250 at F2.8 gives me good shots.
