Why won't the D50 act as 'Commander'?

I know it doesn't work but does anyone know why? What is it from the D70 (or others in the range) that actually activates the slave?

I have used an SB800 on the D50 which actives a wireless D600. Works peachy! None of the manual actually explains the principle......:O

Anyone help?

The commander functionality is not built into the D50. It is one of the key differences between the D50 and D70/D80. As to how or why this function is not available, well you'd have to ask Nikon.

The market for the D40/D50 is entry-level and to keep the cost of the camera down, those higher end features were left out. Just like the internal focus motor...

I realise that the D50 doesn't have the option, my question was what triggers the remote flash?

I understood it to be 'light' as the SB600 & SB800's have light sensors on the side.

If can't be that though as the D70 and D50 both have pop up flashes but only one of them can't talk to the remote flash?

What's the trigger?

I have the impression that the D70s in commander mode "talks" to the SB-600 by flashing the built-in flash in some form of pulse code. The D50 wouldn't have this function by design.

The out-of band flash pulses themselves - This was invented by Minolta over 20 years ago:

BTW both Canon and Minolta also marketed an IR wireless "Commander" unit by itself (without the flash attached)...
