Is there any difference in the models supposedly for each brand? If all they do is connect a wire from each pin on the camera to the corresponding pin on the flash... what's the difference?

The picture attached shows what style cord I am talking about.

After comparing the pin layout on my PentaxAF500FTZ and the Nikon flash pictured below, I am definately wondering if the Nikon TTL Extention Cord (SC-17 or equivilant) will work with a Pentax flash. If anyone knows, please share.

Only the center pin is defined in the ISO standard for hot shoes, all the other pins are proprietary thus can be anywhere and do anything. If the Nikon pins are in the same place as the Pentax pins, are connected pin to pin without any crossovers and have no other cross connections or electronics then it MAY work as an extension cable. Do you want to take a chance?

The flash probably won't work however as the pin functions, other then the center pin, may be different.

...but does a flash extension cord do anything more than connect all the pins on the flash to their designated place on the hotshoe?

The Nikon SC-29 works as an external AF-assist illuminator for placement of SB-600 or SB-800 off-camera

I think you will find that is exactly what is is meant to do.

If you try it, please let us know the outcome, as getting a cable for Pentax is not the easiest, or cheapest, thing to do.
