Is there a cheaper commander unit for Nikon than the SU800? (i.e. a third party unit that works as well?) I've got a D40 and am interested in off-camera flash photography.

Nathan,

Do you want to maintain the use of the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System)? If yes then I cannot help...

However, if you want to give off camera flash a go using your flash unit on manual (Takes some learning) then you can invest in a remote trigger (which sits in your camera hot shoe) and a receiver (attaches to your flash unit).

I recently bought a cheap set to start learning with my SB600, and they cost about $35. You can get them here.

A good giude or How-To can be found here...

Hope this is of some help.

So if I go that route, I can't use the TTL on my camera - is that right? hmm. Ok. Thanks:-)

Correct. I don't think there is another way of getting TTL without a SU-800
I have often thought of simply selling my D50 and buying a used D2Hs for the built in commander and pro body.
