Which cameras???

If you're talking about film they all more or less work in either A-TTL or E-TTL mode; However with Canon digital cameras only the 550EX and 420EX will work via E-TTL.

The Sigma equivalent to the 550EX is the 500DG Super...

I've read some people say the 500DG underexposes a bit. Of course, I've also heard that about the 550EX (although not as often) so it could be as much personal opinion as "fact".

The so many models really is features/power. I got the 550EX for my 10D because I needed the power (its the most powerful) and I wanted the on-flash configurability... but I paid through the nose to get it.

'Underexposed' is actually good since one can increase the brightness in post-processing. What I've found is the 550EX overexposed a lot if the retractable diffuser or attachments such as lumiquest are not used indoor/close quarters... You can not recover from white clips!

My antique Metz 45 CT-5 get more pleasing results than the 550EX even without the E-TTL and just on Auto alone!
