Default Flash for Sony DSC-D770

My Sony DSC-D770 is over one year old and the
flash has stopped working. Will the Sony
HVL-F1000 work on this camera. Sony wants
$171.00 to repair the camera and a HVL-F1000
cost around $90.00. I'm concerned that the
problem in the camera may also affect the
hot shoe. Anybody knows? Thanks, Val

Hi Val,
How much does the camera worth now ?
I don't know this cam, but from pics of it , I see a hot shoe with 1 central pin, meaning no dedicated control pin ( as Nikon and others…) .
To check if the hot shoe still working, use a Ohm-meter between the outer rails and the center pin , use a slow shutter speed to be able to see the circuit closing ( conducting) .
Warning: to be safe , I would use a low voltage Ohmmeter , ie powered by 2 AA for example. Better use a higher range ( ie 1x kilo-Ohms versus 1x Ohms for example) to minimize the current ( just in case ) . You may have to switch polarity as well .

I don't know the HVL-F1000 , the specs I see says that it can work in TTL , I don't know how on your cam ( radio wireless … ?) .
But, if the hot shoe works , any manual / auto-thyristor flash (WITH A LOW TRIGGER VOLTAGE) with a standard shoe will do .

Hope it helps

No, the Sony flash will NOT work with the D770. The HVL-F1000 uses a sync cord and does not have a contact pin in the shoe. You can use any automatic generic type flash with the D770. You do need to go into the menu and enable the external flash before it will work.
