I have a Vivitar Auto Focus Zoom flash, 728AFMi that I used with my film SLR camera. Will this flash work with a digital SLR or will I have to buy a new one?

You can forget about dedication. It wont work. But you might be able to use it in Auto thyristor mode assuming it has one (I'm not familiar with that model) But what you have to be cautious of is thing called "trigger voltage". Some older flashes put a lot of voltage through the PC socket and hot shoe. This can fry a digital camera.

So before you try it you need to know how much voltage the camera can take. This is easy it should be in the manual somewhere. And how much trigger voltage the flash puts out. This might be tougher to find out. Sunpak was nice enough to sent me a list of trigger voltage for every flash unit they ever made. Vivitar might not be so nice. If not you might have to look around on the web. Just google "trigger voltage"

Any chance you would share that Sunpak voltage info? I've been looking at a couple different Sunpak flash units. That info should help me make a better choice.
