Default Olympus FL-40 & Canon Digital Rebel

Has anyone tried using the the Olympus FL-40 on the Canon Digital Rebel? I hate to trade in my flash (have been using it on my Olympus C-750) for the 420EX. I understand that I can use the Auto mode without the TTL function. Any advice?

I'm also interested in hearing about this, moreso to hear about the FL-40, even though it'd be superfluous to spend half the money I paid for a camera on the flash.

you probably can but then your missing the point of having a ETTL flash. you have just given up a great deal of control and metering.

The FL-40 can be set to operate in the automatic mode using the sensor in front of the flash instead of getting this info from the camera... All you need to do is to set the ISO and f-stop on the flash to match that of the camera as you would with any other automatic strobes (the camera shutter is set manually to 1/60s).

Sjms is probably right, have you checked this Sigma EF-500 DG SUPER? It's a virtual clone to the 550EX and cost less than the 420EX...
