Default Metz 48 or 430ex II?

I have gotten a T1i and wondering which one of these are better.

430ex II - I can get for 230 usd.
Metz 48 - 192 usd.

I'm leaning towards the 430ex II, but I've seen rave reviews for the metz being more powerful and the usb upgradeability. Any other opinions? This is going to be my first flash and I want to mare sure I'm getting the most for my $$$.

They are both great flashed. You really can not go wrong either way. I went with the 48 as it was 30 dollars less expensive. Both have excellent build quality, both can be wireless slave flashes. But with either on, get a stefo defuser, to soften the light.

With this choice, it just comes down to personal taste. There is no real feature difference. Metz has more range 48 meters vs 43 meters. The canon has a nicer lcd and button system. Metz has a usb port. Next to those 3 things there is really not much difference between the 2.

I have both flashes and they really are, as shoturtle says, quite equal. Personally I would save the $38.

Patwrik!

Glad to hear of your new purchase.

As for flash, I have to my side a "Canon" magazine. I know you mentioned the Metz 48, but this magazine gave the Metz Mecablitze 58 AF-1 a 95% rating, H O W E V E R ... they also give the same rating to the much cheaper Nissin Di866 Professional, which has full wireless control, be GN, can be updated with firmware. The Nissin has all the features of the Canon and more. Just thought I would let you know. All the best.

I think you are confusing the nissin, the di866 is almost 300 dollars, it is the one that competes with the metz 58, and canon 580 ex II.

The one that is in the price range of the op is the di622 and it has a bit better range then the canon at 44 meters.

The Nissan Di622 is made for the Canon or Nikon cameras. I use the Nikon version on my D-5000 and it is a very good flash.

So I can go either way...great...

I am leaning going the Canon route...primarily because of the brand name...

Thanks all for your advice...

between the metz and the canon, it is all up to personal preference. No performance issues at all.

So I finally picked up my 430ex II and a pretty good deal for 210 shipped with a Sto-Fen diffuser, AA batteries and charger.

Was playing around with it today and I was wondering if they are any quickstart guides or walkthroughs on how to optimally use the flash? I am looking for something similar to the magic lantern guides for help.

Anyone one know of any good resources to learn?
