Default Metz 45 cl-4 or 550 EX ? ? ?

I am buying a Canon Eos 10d, and wanted to know which would serve me better. I have used the Metz before and like the fact it is on the side, for extra grip, especially when using the 10d with extra batt pack and all that bulk and weight! I know the 550ex is Dedicated, but does it make SO much difference?
Thanks.[/quote]

I have both the 550EX and an older 45CT-5 (with the digital readout)... The dual-head Metz produces a much more even illumination (1 direct + 1 bounce) in the Auto mode with the camera on manual.

There's time when the 550EX TTL mode is more useful, that's when you have to quicky mix in ambient light... or do Flash Exposure Lock (FEL) 8)

Thanks for that. I was erring towards the Metz as I also liked the dual flash capability. Although, can you use the 550ex with the camera┤s flash? Also, if the camera is vertical for quick portraits, bride and groom down the Aisle etc., I guess as the flash is well above the camera, you have less chance of shadow to the left or right! For mixing in ambient light, I could just use the smaller flash on the Metz and turn the head right round. Any adjustments could then be made in Photoshop?
How do you find the Eos 10d? Your gallery is stunning.
Thanks for your reply.

You can't, The 550EX body will interfere with the built-in flash... beside the camera's firmware is pretty smart: you can't pop up the camera's flash once a 550EX is mounted on the camera!

IMO the 550EX is more precise when you do a fill-in outdoor with its pre-flash TTL... The Metz is much better suited for indoor especially on brides and grooms where the 550EX tends to err on its metering which is coupled to its AF focus points!

Thanks a lot for that. Just been and ordered the 10D, Metz Flash, 28-135USM IS, and accessories (I need to lie down!). Walked VERY quickly past the EOS 1DS (I am a salesmans dream!). The nice gentleman at the shop said if I dont get on with the lens or flash, he will exchange for the 550ex and 24-85 USM respectively. Thanks again for your useful help. This is a great site N┤Úst pas?
