Default Nikon SB25 and Nikon SB26 with Nikon D90

is it safe to use an old Nikon SB25 OR SB26 flash with a Nikon D90 digital camera?

Thom Hogan seems to think so. http://www.bythom.com/sb25.htm http://www.bythom.com/sb26.htm

They can't use the latest iTTL modes however so I wouldn't recommend buying one.

ok...my fault. i think i left out some key info like using a Quantum Battery 1+ pack with the SB25/SB26 flash on a Nikon D90. Also, i already have had the SB25/SB26 for some years now. So, is this combination safe to use on a D90?

The key danger with external flash is the voltage on the trigger pin. If it's too high it can burn out your camera but the SB25 and SB26 are considered safe according to the various public databases on the Internet. You can double check by measuring with a volt meter.

Page 236 of the D90 manual list available features of other Nikon flash units. Both the SB25 and SB26 are listed for non-TTL auto, Manual, Repeating Flash, and Rear Curtain Sync capable.

I am not familiar with the Quantum Battery +1, and obviously it was not discussed in the D90 manual.

Having the two flashes, may want to consider getting electronic triggers and use both in manual mode off camera. Those are very popular for off camera flash and some guy name David Hobby keeps buying up all the SP28s on ebay. (just kidding - sort of, but he highly recommends the for strobist setups)
