Default HS30 External flash help?

Guys, wonder if you could steer me in the right direction please? Recently invested in an EF-20 to go in the shoe of my HS30, but I cannot seem to get it to flash? the option for "Use external flash" on the menu is greyed out... It test flashes fine, so I'm guessing that the fact I am a total noob to the photography scene is where the problem lies... Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated please? Thanks.

What mode are you in? Put it in "manual" once and see what happens.

Donno about the HS-30 but the HS-10 will not operate the flash if in silent mode. Makes no sense to me but it is documented in the manual.

Hmmm, still no joy on manual (M)

Still greyed out......also the plot thickens as I removed the external flash and attempted to fire a shot with the on-board flash and it wont light either.....

The flash icon has a line through it on both options!!

So just taking black images.......It also seems to have a slow shutter (is very long click) but I havent touched anything...

I have read the manual, which seems easy to follow but to be honest its very basic and assumes you know a lot of the terminology.

I have also worshipped the god that is google but its not easy when you dont really know what you are looking for....

I recently upgraded from a Finepix S5500 and wanted to treat the family to a nice unit, but to be honest at this rate I'll be taking the good old comfortable slipper on holiday at this rate.....

Any more ideas please?

Thanks for the suggestion Craig.

I got all excited, and looked up silent mode, but alas, it was set to off.
