I have a Nikon Coolpix 8700 and want an external flash that has the capability of being held away from the camera. Can any flash do that or do I need a special one with some kind of adapter cord? The Nikon brand is so expensive, so I currently looking at the Sigma EF - 500 DG Super TTL and the Sunpak PZ - 5000 AF TTL flashes. Are either of these compatible flashes? Do you have better suggestions?

The Sigma EF 500 DG Super works wirelessly with both Canon and Minolta system in TTL (both as Master or Slaves); However this flash was designed before the release of the latest Nikon Speedlight... I'm afraid it won't work in the wireless mode, but with the TTL remote cord it should be fine:

You did not mention the SB-30 in your reply. Is that Speedlight a good choice for the Coolpix 8700, or NOT a good choice?
