I just received a new 420EX for my Digital Rebel. It is a fantastic flash, but I noticed that the plastic hinge of the battery door is very poorly made and opening and closing the battery door is rather difficult as it gets stuck a little and you have to wiggle it carefully into position. Has anyone else noticed this or should I return my flash? Thanks.

It's the same on my 550EX... just wiggle it. It makes for a very tight fit when closed!

Thanks, I guess I'll just have to be very careful opening and closing the door. I am kind of surprised that Canon would make such a flimsy door...

I've had my 420ex for about a month now and I have noticed that same problem. I think it's a bad design on the door. I also have an older 540ez, they should have used the same door as on that model. I guess we're just gonna have to be careful with this door on the 420ex

I've had the 420 EX for about a year, and I too am frustrated with the battery door. Often, I feel that if I force it, I might break it. And it doesn't just happen when I have extra pressure on the door as when there are four batteries installed.

Unfortunately, I think it is a design problem. I also owned the 430 EZ, the 420 Ex's predecessor, with my film camera (Elan IIe). It had a much more robust feel to it. Those of you who haven't used the 430 EZ would really realize that the 420's construction, especially at the battery latch, is such a comedown in quality.

I hope enough folks write in and complain so that Canon will consider shoring up this weak point.
