I just purchased a Canon G5 and love it. I would, however like to use my Vivitar 283 flash (circa 1977) with it. Does any one make an adapter that will allow older flashes like mine to be triggered either by the hot shoe on the G5, or as a slave. Any details would be helpful.

Yes, but you must isulate the high trigger voltage of your flash:

use the hot shoe to hot shoe safe sync between the camera hotshe and your flash

Thanks, I'll check it out. It looks like they may have some other useful devices as well.

If you wanted to use a slave with your camera, you have to find out if your camera uses a preflash (the flash fires at a lower output to set exposure ~100ms before taking the picture and firing the flash at full power) or not. If your camera fires a preflash, you'll need a slave compatible with that (if not, the slave will trigger at the preflash and the flash will be dark when your camera takes the picture).
