Am trying to figure out the difference between the 420EX 550EX and 580Ex besides price. I like to get one for my G6 but don't know exactly what to look for. Know I need one as the flash on the G6 is right on top of the lens. Would like to be able to bounce the lightbut all three do this. Any comments or suggestions?

The 420EX has a GN of 42 and is strictly an automatic flash and can only be used as slaves in a multi-flashes setup - The 550EX has a GN of 55 and can be put on manual as well as automatic and is being replaced by the 580EX with a GN of 58. Both the 550/580EX can act as a master or slaves. You can also do flash exposure bracketing if the camera is capable on the 550/580EX or manual flash exposure compensation on the flash themselves. The 420EX do not have theses last two features

All 3 flashes have moveable head (up/down & sideway) so all three can be bounced... you might want to pick a higher power one though for bouncing; However, the 580EX cost as much as another camera itself.

Ahhh Jeezze. I hate confusing. How about if I state my needs 'As simple as possible ' programming, learning a key pad, Ahhhh Jeeezzzze. Oh yeah and I refuse to pay as much for a flash as the camera. Well maybe I sould say I just can't afford to.

Thanks NHL for all the explanations and help. I ended up getting a Promaster 5550DXplus adaptor for Canon, total cost approx. $100. Angles and swivals and you can hook up slaves. Easy to use and the instruction are only a couple of pages for us dummies.

Thanks again. Suzan
