Hi there,

I have a simple question - I have a budget of £200 and want to buy an external flash for my Canon 300D. I have seen the Speedlites recommended and the Sigma 500. Can anyone recommend any others and - overall - which is the one to go for?

If you are comfortable with flashes in auto mode, there are manygoodchoices of generic flashes: Vivitar 285HV, Sunpak , etc ... , even a (used) Metz 45CL(CT)4 will cost youjust about200$. Of course, looking at my avatar, you know what I would recommend to you :G.

Sorry, my error
So 1 U.K. £ = 1.9 US $ , your budget is 380 US $

I would go for a dedicated Canon (or Sigma) flash then, but I don't know which one is compatible with your camera

It's not for the lack of response, but because there's no other choice!

The Sigma EF-500DF Super is the only affordable E-TTL/2 alternative: It's priced against the 420EX, but have all the features and output power of the 550EX instead!

You can also go with a Metz, However it'll cost you more than the Canon's in the 1st place. Ritz/Wolf camera has a cheaper modular flash, but by the time you added up the adapter for the EOS - you're not saving that much: it's lower in power and lose all the wireless functions.

... or you can do what KCan suggested, any 'Auto' mode flash will work, that'll be the cheapest
