I am getting my first dSLR, the rebel XT and I super excited. I am also getting the very cool, but very expensive 17-85 canon lens (it's a gift and they don't mind paying for it). =)

I wanted a good flash. Nothing too crazy but something that will get the job done. I probably don't need a canon flash. I would LIKE to try close to 100-150. Possible?

Thanks!

PS. I will be mostly shooting group shots and portraits inside where the flash would be needed.

if you could stretch it to $200, then the sigma 500 dg super is the best flash in the business for its price..(i have one on my 20d)..it has all the features of canon's 550ex, for half the price.. this flash is fully wireless compatible as both a master and slave, so it is perfect if you ever want a multiple flash setup or just want to get the flash off the camera..

can be had for $189 from www.sigma4less.com

if you really want to save the money, from the same website you can get a 500 dg st for $133.. but you are going to lose wireless compatibility..

Checked both out...they look great!

I guess I have to go the super route...looks more fun and the wireless capabilities are too cool to pass up.

Thanks for the link and the advice (again!).

Well - you have to get a least two units then... The way Canon design their is such that you can't wirelesly control the external unit with the camera's built-in flash

Not so for Minolta or Nikon!

I use a $60 Sunpak 383 Super which does the trick for me on my 20D.

I also use a Sto-Fen Diffuser ($20) which gives a nice effect.

hmm...what do you mean about "not the same for nikon/minolta?" What flash would you get for the D70s? Could I THEN get the sigma 500 dg super?

he means that you will need 2 sigma 500 dg supers to work wirelessly, one as a master and one set as slave.. or you need 1 super and a canon wireless transmitter...

with the nikon d70 and minolta 7d, the built in (popup) flash can work as the wireless transmitter.. the built-in on the canon's do not work this way..

i would not let that be the deciding factore... there are still many reasons the rebel xt is a superior camera..

Hards...I was kidding, I would never switch to the Nikon after you helped me so much.

That said, I really do like the "feel" of the Nikon and the larger screen but the Canon lenses seem so much better (more choices, mostly) and XT really is a great system.

I know we've been over this but what are you're main reasons for why the XT is a "superior camera?" Don't worry, I'm getting the XT already but it's nice to know why I made the right choice. =)
