Default Sony Flash for F717

I recently purchased an F717 and would like to buy an external flash for the hot shoe to reduce red eye, increase performance, etc. Is there any advantage to the sony flash over a generic model in terms of integration with the camera to fine tune exposures or otherwise improve image quality? Also, is the camera able to 1) alter flash power based upon conditions and 2) meter/observe the flash output to take into account use of a diffuser, bouncing off the ceiling, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Straight from Sony.com ...the F717 has 1 proprietory external flash option:

High Quality Intelligent Shoe Hinged Flash. For use with video cameras equipped with the Intelligent Accessory shoe (4 AA batteries)

Equipped with an automatic metering system

Synchronized with the shutter of the video camera

Equipped with the wide angle diffuser panel

Hinge to allow bounce flash photography
